HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AND HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
I grew up with a cabinet shop 100 feet from my house and have always been around woodworkers and construction. I started sweeping up the shop after school to building kitchens in the summer and after high school. Initially I didn’t see myself continuing down the path of cabinetry and saw it more as something that was there if need be. My passion was art, I’ve always been creative and love to sketch, paint, and create most anything. At the time our business was small and kitchens were more about function and storage. But, as our business grew we began to have the opportunity to be more and more creative with the designs. We eventually made the shift from manufacturing, to full time designing and that’s when I really started to see cabinetry and kitchens as art and a creative outlet. I also was very fulfilling to know the end product was something that was being used and enjoyed every day. I love knowing a well designed space can bring people together and can become a place where memories are made.
WHAT’S ONE THING THAT YOU THINK PEOPLE GET WRONG ABOUT KITCHEN DESIGN?
Often times I think people ignore what is going on in the rest of the home and have a kitchen style that may not blend with rest of the house. The styling of the kitchen needs to be cohesive and work together with the other elements of the home. That doesn’t mean you can’t be creative or unique, it just means your selections and design elements have a relationship to the overall look of the home.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN STYLE? WHAT INSPIRES YOUR DESIGNS?
My design style seems to always be evolving but I find myself often drawn to more classic and traditional styles. I always like to create balanced spaces that fit the rest of the architecture of the home. Pulling details from the architecture help make the woodwork feel cohesive and like it should be there. Proportion and scale are at the forefront and I’m really drawn to more organic and natural materials like real wood, stones, and metals. I love the details that have stood the test of time.
Traveling, especially to places with history, are very inspiring for me. I like the quirky little things that often come out of years of change or necessity but end up looking great. I think traveling helps you see what all is out there and keeps you from getting stuck in a particular look.
WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF KITCHEN DESIGN?
I love spending time with my wife and 2 year old daughter. We like to travel and enjoy going places where we can spend time in nature and make memories together. I really enjoy fishing and the outdoors as well.
